Who Needs Total Hip Replacement Surgery?
Hip replacement becomes necessary when hip joint damage gets bad enough to interfere with everyday life. Osteoarthritis is the most common reason. The cartilage cushioning the hip wears thin, and eventually the bones grind directly against each other. Other conditions that may need hip replacement include rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis (where blood supply to the femoral head is lost), hip fractures in elderly patients, ankylosing spondylitis and post-traumatic arthritis. Dr. Ankur Singh in Noida does a full evaluation with X-rays, MRI and physical examination to work out whether hip replacement is the right call.
- Severe osteoarthritis causing chronic hip pain and stiffness
- Avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis) of the femoral head
- Hip fractures in elderly patients that cannot be repaired
- Rheumatoid arthritis affecting the hip joint
- Congenital hip dysplasia or developmental hip disorders
- Failed previous hip surgery requiring revision
- Ankylosing spondylitis causing hip joint fusion and immobility
Types of Hip Replacement Surgery Offered in Noida
Dr. Ankur Singh offers several types of hip replacement procedures based on the patient's condition, age, activity level and bone quality. The right procedure depends on how much damage there is and what the patient's mobility goals are.
- Total Hip Replacement (THR) — Complete replacement of both the ball and socket of the hip joint with artificial components
- Partial Hip Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty) — Only the femoral head (ball) is replaced, commonly used for certain types of hip fractures
- Anterior Approach Hip Replacement — A muscle-sparing technique that accesses the hip from the front, allowing faster recovery
- Posterior Approach Hip Replacement — A traditional approach providing excellent access to the hip joint for complex cases
- Bilateral Hip Replacement — Both hips replaced in a single or staged surgery for patients with bilateral arthritis
- Revision Hip Replacement — Replacement of a worn or failed hip implant with a new one
Hip Replacement Implant Materials and Options
What a hip implant is made of directly affects how long it lasts and how well it works. Modern implants use combinations of metal alloys (titanium or cobalt-chromium), ceramic and medical-grade polyethylene (plastic). Metal-on-polyethylene is the most widely used pairing and works well for most patients. Ceramic-on-ceramic wears down very slowly and is often a better fit for younger, more active patients. The femoral stem, the piece that goes into the thighbone, can be cemented in place or press-fit so that bone grows around it, depending on bone quality. Dr. Ankur Singh picks the implant type after considering the patient's age, how active they are, bone density and joint shape.
- Metal-on-polyethylene — Most commonly used, reliable long-term track record
- Ceramic-on-ceramic — Very low wear, well suited for younger active patients
- Ceramic-on-polyethylene — Combines low wear with a smooth bearing surface
- Cemented implants — Bonded to bone using surgical cement, often used in elderly patients with weaker bone
- Uncemented (press-fit) implants — Designed for bone to grow into the implant surface for a biological fix
Risks and Precautions After Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip replacement has a strong track record, but it does carry some risks worth knowing about. In the early weeks, hip dislocation is the main concern. That is why patients learn specific movement rules: do not cross the legs, do not bend the hip past 90 degrees and avoid twisting the body while sitting. Blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) are managed with blood thinners and early walking. Infection at the surgical site is uncommon but taken seriously with sterile technique and antibiotics. Over the years, the implant can wear or loosen, so regular follow-up X-rays matter. Dr. Ankur Singh walks patients through all of these precautions before they leave the hospital.
